We buy coffees that are TransFair USA "Fair Trade" Certified, Certified Organic, or certified by the Rainforest Alliance or Smithsonian Institute's Bird Friendly programs. Only TransFair assures a floor price to members of its certified cooperatives, who must abide by, among other issues, child labor standards and a democratic structure. Organic certification and Rainforest Alliance certifications focus on environmental sustainability but also require growers to meet social and employment standards. We are a TransFair® certified roaster.

We may also purchase coffee direct and through wholesalers from select farms and you will see these as estate coffees in our store. These coffees must verifiably meet the intent of the fair trade certification: Gourmet coffee and a fair price to the growers and fair wages to their laborers. Fair Trade, in its current focus on small holder cooperatives, has a blind spot with regard to larger, socially and economically responsible farms.

These trade practices provide you with premium goods, farmers with a better living and all of us with a better world. Fairly traded, premium specialty coffee typically provides farmers and their workers with sustainable incomes ... enough to encourage investments like schools and health care within their communities.
